Merit AI Principles

Our Commitments

1. Humans are responsible

We are masters of our craft, and the craft is ours to answer for. AI never signs off on the work. A person does, through every review and every decision, all the way to launch. We guide AI. It never guides us.

2. Empathy stays uniquely human

The design is only as good as the insight behind it, so we never outsource empathy. AI can help us organize what we heard. It can’t sit with someone and notice what’s really happening under the surface. Insight comes from people paying attention to people.

3. Curation over quantity

AI is very good at making a lot of noise (and sometimes slop) very fast. We curate. We infuse taste. We question everything — is this true, is this relevant, should this exist at all?

4. We show our work

We're clear about how AI touched a project and we'll proactively communicate how it’s used.

5. We keep rethinking this.

AI is changing fast, and so are we: learning, re-skilling, and testing what's new against what's true. These principles get revisited regularly.

What it looks like in practice

As AI settles into how we work, we're watching for the bright spots, the places where the work actually gets better.

Saved hours go back into the work.

The time AI frees up gets reinvested into more thinking, more listening, and more time with clients. When a tool makes the work better for a client, using it well is part of the job.

More organizations can access great work.

A landing page that once required a build team is now within reach for a small nonprofit. Same process, same human judgment at every step, now accessible for smaller teams.

More big moments

When we have a tool that helps us tackle the small stuff, we gain space to make bigger moves. More creative problem-solving, more collaboration, more conversation, more aha! moments.

Other things for internals

We are stewards of client data, research participants, and IP and we’re committed to keeping it safe.

Let’s make something better.

Good tools don’t replace good thinking. They give us more room for it. If you’re working on something that matters, we’d love to hear about it.
